Binding
I use this template to estimate how much to bend where and match the profile as best I can.
Binding
I then turn to the bending iron which is very hot. The small amount of water converts to steam which softens the wood and makes it pliable. I bend the shape by eye.
Binding
First I spray a little water on the binding. The bindings are all Indian rosewood.
Binding
I am now preparing to bend the bindings of the guitar. The bindings are inlayed around the perimiter of the top and the back to protect the edges and to reduce absorption of moisture by the end grain.
Assembly
Here is everything glued together in the go-bar clamping deck that I made. The go-bars (black) are fiberglass. The go-bar deck system, with wooden go-bars of course, goes all the way back to the Egyptians. Humans have been smarter than me for a long time.
Assembly
Here, all of the components are together for final assembly. I have rehearsed the glue-up several times. Glue-ups are the most stressful times in woodworking because wet glue waits for no one. There is a limited amount of open time and when the glue sets, your’e done.
Assembly
The top has been glued to the sides here and the assembly is back in the mould. You can see the bracing system comlplete and let into the linings of the sides.
Assembly
Carving the heel has been the biggest challenge for me as I have no carving experience. No time like the present to learn a new skill!!!!
